my first newsletter, lucky you!
Welcome to my first newsletter, issue 101!
This is a wholly selfish experiment, where I put my burning opinions or juicy links in a newsletter instead of hounding friends via text for their take on it! I assume my only subscribers will be the people I’d text anyway, but now it’s delivered to your inbox! I hope it works out because Colleen Wynn made me incredible BRANDED DIGITAL ASSETS for it!
Of course, I started a new job right when I am beginning this, so I have less perusal time than before, but my batting average is still pretty good.
Let me lay out my RULES FOR SUBSCRIBERS:
If you are a subscriber, you are required to “thoughtfully” respond to at least 1 item in the newsletter in writing. The reason I’m doing this in the first place is because I want to know what my friends think about whatever the topic may be, after I’ve laid out my own opinion. I’m not trying to talk to a brick wall here!
SO - If I noticed that you have not responded 3 newsletters in a row, you will be unsubscribed. Sorry, I don’t make the rules. This will be rly sad when my last remaining subscriber doesn’t respond and I am forced to unsubscribe them, but again — I don’t make the rules. Also, there’s no way I’m actually going to keep track.
So let’s just dive right in!
Talkin’ TV - fyi: i don’t believe in spoiler warnings
Alright, Search Party was renewed for a 5th season. I love the show, but I’m not convinced another season is necessary. Does this mean Dory won’t be part of it, or did she not really die? And if she didn’t die, then why did they waste so much of my time? Honestly, part of me felt that while Season 4 was insane and kind of masterful, ultimately it was a waste of my time! Why did literally ANY OF THAT happen, what did it achieve? BUT very excited to see anything else these creators make.
OK UPDATE I actually read that article I linked to, and it mentions that Dory wakes up in an ambulance and didn’t die in season 4? Did I just forget that happened? Ok, if that’s the case, then I disagree with my previous opinion and they’re gonna HAVE to do another season - they have some ‘splainin to do about what happened. Like the baked goods creepy factory family? HUH? anyway, I hope they just make the whole show about Portia and Elliot.
Has anyone watched any of the foreign tv shows on HBOmax and are they worth it? ‘I Hate Suzie’ and the one about the Israeli bride/murderess, “Possessions?” There’s also a Spanish one about like a flailing friend? Should i? DARE i?
I started watching the Australian shows “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” and “Please Like Me” (both are by the same creator, Josh Thomas) and they’re both actually very nice, cozy, small shows that bring me joy that at least FEELS real. great characters! small but dynamic, comfortable plots! silly! sad! funny! It’s February 2021, you have to find SOMETHING that makes you feel alive.
Things I’ve recently thought about that you’d expect to be from a high person but i wasn’t:
sometimes my clock is completely silent and sometimes it really goes ‘tick tock’ very loudly. What is the deal with this?
people in the 1600’s COULD beatbox they just didn’t - OR, what if they did?
when i finally find a pair of pants that actually cover my lower calves/ankles, i don’t think people will recognize me.
reading corner:
I recently read this really nice article about whatever happened to Shelly Duvall in The Hollywood Reporter, and it felt good to read— and fuck Dr. Phil! Did you even ever think Dr. Phil and Shelly Duvall could be in the same sentence?
J’deteste reading apologies on notes app re: reply all guy. just... i don’t care, i think it’s gross. I’m not sure what the alternative is, i just have almost no tolerance for a notes app apology! be better. there’s too much shit happening right now for me to have to read an apology from a Nice Podcast Guy Who Is Actually Disappointing. I think the bigger annoyance to me might be that anyone is actually surprised by shitty behavior from powerful podcast/media people? like lol.. ok. THOUGHTS?
Have you noticed that there’s what I would consider an insane amount of chic instagram infographics denigrating people for even contemplating that life will be back to normal after we’ve been vaccinated and that vaccination won’t be the end of our struggles and we still can’t hang out with our friends after we’ve been vaccinated? Can these people seriously fuck off?? Keep your day job, let me have something to live for!
A Nice End To My First Newsletter:
Thanks for reading my jumbled thoughts! This might be an abrupt end, but hey that’s just the way things go sometimes.
My immediate thought upon waking up this morning was just “Judy Chicago.” She has the best name in the world! I took this as a sign, and ordered unauthorized prints for my home. God bless Judy.
Emma’s World will be an evolving situation (obviously) with better content next time, if we’re lucky.
Thanks for reading this absolutely indulgent trash (u know u love me) and don’t forget that it’s mandatory to respond to at least one topic. I don’t know how responses work, whether you just email me, or leave a comment. I think I’ll leave that up to you!
xoxo, see you next time!!

WOW. Have you seen the Joan Didion film, or read Blue Nights? The untold stories of what women in Hollywood have endured- until NOW we can only hope---positively curls my hair!!!!! the Shelly Duvall piece is beautiful and really well done, I think. Yug Paul Simon- he's a thief. Also, I don't get the Dr. Phil thing and I don't want to know. And yes, I ought to wake up to Judy Chicago! Love you to pieces.
Emma darling, you're a gem and I love your new newsletter.
Firstly, I adore that your initial thought upon waking was "Judy Chicago." It was most definitely a sign from God, and I'm jealous that She inspires you to shop in this expansive, life-affirming manner. Can we go see The Dinner Party installation sometime? (Also, I believe Judy Chicago has officially trademarked, Dinner Party-designed, functional-use dinner party plates, and I think we should both consider investing in them and holding a cocktail party.)
Secondly, HBO is on my list the moment because "The Undoing" was at best a two-hour movie, and spending six hours to tell that lackluster story was a tremendous waste of time, money, and talent. Hopefully Noma Dumezweni will get her own series next time, which would be much more interesting.
Instead of committing hours and hours to a new series (who has the attention span or time?), I recommend watching the excellent 2016 French film "Things to Come" on Hulu, in which the luminous Isabelle Huppert plays a philosophy professor who experiences a series of extreme life changes over the course of a year and finds the strength to move on, all in 102 minutes. It's much more respectful the ticking minutes of our existence (six hours which I will never get back, HBO, God!), and I found it quite inspiring in the new atmosphere of chaos that currently reigns over our world.
Thirdly, Madonna is always the right choice:
